How many people are in space right now? →
bbbrad: jstn: Currently six, “all on the International Space Station.” Twelve more astronauts are scheduled to go during 2012, and China will be sending its first taikonauts to the Tiangong experimental space station it launched last year. 2012 will be a fun year for keeping up with how many people are floating around among the nothingness.

Pizza Rulez: PIZZA RULEZ 2011 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE,... →
Last minute Christmas gift suggestions? pizzarulez: I LoooOOoooooOOOoOOOOVe CHRISTMAS!!!! The tree, the lights, my grandmother muttering icily, “I’ve never seen a house like this at Christmas” because she grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting and my sullen WASP parents are unwilling to fill every room of our house with tiny singing dolls to satisfy her.

Cool Arrives in a Slice of Chinatown
Some now call the neighborhood Chumbo, combining the names of Chinatown and its high-brow Brooklyn neighbor across the Manhattan Bridge, Dumbo. It sits largely south of East Broadway, where Chinese immigrants still dominate and the upscale restaurants and nightclubs of the Lower East Side have only just begun to penetrate. The rent is cheap—about $2,900 a month for the average three-bedroom,...

“It’s okay. Try not to be too upset about it. Humor is simply your brain being surprised by an unexpected variation in a pattern that it recognizes. If your brain doesn’t recognize the pattern or the pattern is already too familiar to your brain, you won’t find something humorous.” H&1/2 handles her frequently asked questions really gracefully via FAQs from...

In praise of impractical programming
I won’t argue that journalism schools should squander those dearly-won computer-science credits on whimsical introductions to programming. But if you want to advance as a programmer, you need to take some impractical detours. If you don’t know how to program, it’s fine to pick something practical; there are fine introductions in languages like Python, Ruby, or Javascript. But then try learning a...

How To Give Good Gift. Despite an...
“The right questions invite a dialogue that not only helps to build the relationship (we now exercise together, though not with the elliptical, and our kids love to help us in the raised garden that I constructed) but also reveals a lot about what the person might hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning. How else would I have known to buy my wife a new sports bra or an enormous box...

evgenymorozov: The first paragraph of Matt Cartmill’s review of Donna Haraway’s Primate Visions book. It appeared in the International Journal of Primatology (Vol. 12, No. 1, 1991) This is a book that contradicts itself a hundred times; but that is not a criticism of it, because its author thinks contradictions are a sign of intellectual ferment and vitality. This is a book that...
